The short version
Kipless does not send us your data.
Kipless does not require an account. Neither edition includes analytics, telemetry, advertising, or app-provided crash reporting. Neither edition sends your usage, sleep sessions, configuration, or diagnostics to Shiina Labs. The edition-specific system features and update behavior are described below.
Distribution editions
The build you use matters
Kipless is distributed in two separate editions. They share the core wake-session experience, but their system components and update paths are different.
Mac App Store edition
Sandboxed, with no privileged components
The Mac App Store edition includes only System and Display wake modes and runs within the App Sandbox. It does not include Closed Lid mode, the privileged background Helper, a LaunchDaemon, `pmset disablesleep`, Sparkle, or another self-update mechanism. Its core functionality does not require a network connection; application updates are provided by the Mac App Store.
Direct edition · GitHub / Homebrew
Closed Lid and optional update checks
The Direct edition is distributed through GitHub Releases and Homebrew and includes the optional Closed Lid mode. Closed Lid uses a privileged background Helper after you approve it in System Settings. The Helper performs only fixed local sleep-control operations and does not collect, store, or transmit personal data. The Direct edition also includes Sparkle for update checks. It connects to the network when you manually check for updates or enable automatic update checks; these update connections are not used for analytics or usage reporting.
On-device data
What Kipless stores locally
Each edition may store preferences, selected modes, durations, and other app state in its own macOS preferences or app storage so it can provide the feature on your Mac. This data stays on your device. The editions do not read or migrate each other's settings or session state.
During a session, Kipless keeps timing and sleep-control state locally. Ending a session releases its sleep assertions; it does not create an online record.
Diagnostics
System and crash reports
macOS may create its own logs, crash reports, or diagnostic data according to your system settings. Kipless does not transmit these reports to Shiina Labs. If you choose to share a report with Apple or someone else, that sharing is governed by the recipient's policy.
Deletion
Removing local data
Deleting Kipless removes its app bundle. macOS may retain preferences or system-managed records according to its normal behavior. Kipless does not keep an account or a server-side copy of your data to delete.
